Zoom in on Finds

A RFG Member only seminar, two talks to coincide with the publication of the Piercebridge finds volume (18.00 – 19.15).

Bridge over troubled water: Roman finds from the Tees at Piercebridge
Hella Eckardt, University of Reading and Philippa Walton, Cotswold Archaeology

The Roman river finds from Piercebridge offer an opportunity to consider why it is critical to analyse entire artefact assemblages, rather than only selected, possibly ritual objects. We also explore what the objects reveal about the identities of the people who deposited, whether as votive offerings or rubbish.

River finds in the Netherlands – an overview
Stefanie Hoss, University of Cologne

Stefanie will give a short overview of the many (mainly metal) finds discovered in the various branches of the rivers Rhine and Meuse, be it from dredging or the excavations of watercourses near settlements (from tiny creeks to fully-grown harbours) or through chance discoveries. The common denominator of all of these elements is the astonishing number and quality of the finds, which (while of course a blessing) poses a number of interesting challenges.
